This is my first post about a re-issue. It’s also my first post about a Bollywood session musician who used Roland synthesisers and drum machines to create Synthesizing -- Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat -- a record that has been plucked out of a sea of obscurity 30 years later, and the 72 year old is now touring with the album. For real.
I’m going to see Charanjit Singh at Field Day tomorrow. I pray seeing him ends up being one of the most surreal/bizzare/mind-blowing/wtf moments of my life.
Singh’s music meshes the melodious fluidity of indian ragas into a kaleidoscopic disco trip. And despite the technological restraints producing kitsch disco beats and a blatantly electric tanpura drone it all feels perfectly collected and effortless.
