Grizzlies in Brooklyn

appropriateIs Brooklyn going to be the Brit School of America? Are we going to get bored? Not if you compare Vampire Weekend, MGMT or Beirut with Leona Lewis, The Feeling or The bloody Kooks.

Its all gone topsy-turvy. Brooklyn is producing great British music. The Brit School is churning out American dross.

They sound like a great British band, but Grizzly Bear come from, yes, Brooklyn. Radiohead love them and so do I. They have three EP/Albums out, with Yellow House and Friend both receiving critical acclaim.

Listen to He Hit Me (and it felt like a kiss), for interest, 60s girl group The Crystals made the original. Released in 2006, Knife is an older, but oh so fantastic, song. Super trippy video too:

Burn VHS

VHS or Beta dining

Spent far too long looking for good music today, and failing. Is there anything out there at the moment? Decided to go back through my playlists and refound this great pop track from VHS or Beta. The Louisvilleans have three albums on their backs, and this is taken from their latest, Bring on the Comets. Dance-Punk. Whatever. Its good.

VHS or Beta: Burn it all Down

Grounded on Elbow

Elbow, just GroundedI have fallen in love with Elbow’s Grounds for Divorce. Probably the best guitar-lick ever.

Elbow’s album The Seldom Seen Kid makes me think of Coldplay, if they were actually good. They could challenge for the best British band, and actually take the mantle so many of Elbow’s fans feel they deserve.

Their next single, One Day Like This, from The Seldom Seen Kid. Could be on course to be a massive summer anthem. Possibly the most uplifting song about a hang over yet:

Like a Bird

Andrew Bird coach surfing Violinist and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird from Chicago seems to have quite a following in the US, and rightly so. He’s playing at IndigO2 (the dome) on 26 April, and will do my best to get to it. In fact give me a shout if you want to come a long!

I’ll definitely buy his album Armchair Apocrypha this week (payday soon!). His single Imitosis is quite a fresh sound. Good video too:
